The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education was established in 1979 as the Council for the Advancement of Standards for Student Services/Development Programs, a consortium of professional associations representing student affairs practitioners committed to assuring quality programs and services for students. Today, CAS oversees the development of standards for new service areas and the systematic review and periodic revision of existing standards and guidelines.

AFA has engaged as a part of CAS since 1979 to help facilitate self-assessment and program review as a way for student services to demonstrate their contribution to institutional priorities. As a benefit of AFA membership, professionals may access the Fraternity and Sorority Advising Programs Standards at no cost.

Access the CAS Standards for Fraternity and Sorority Advising Programs (FSAP)

CAS has provided a set of instructions to guide professionals through the process to purchase the standards from the CAS store. A coupon code is provided with the instructions to reduce the purchase price to zero.

1. Login in FSCentral.
2. Select the ‘AFA Learning’ tile.
3. Search ‘CAS’ in the Catalog section of AFA Learning. Find the ‘AFA: CAS Standards for Fraternity Sorority Advising Programs (FSAP)’ course and select ‘Enroll Now.’
4. Navigate to the Your Enrollments section to access and download the instructions document.

On-Demand Webinar Series: Using CAS Standards as a Framework for Continuous Improvement

In spring 2026, AFA provided a two-part webinar series that showcased ways in which the Fraternity and Sorority Advising Program (FSAP) Standards from the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) provides a framework for continuous improvement. These sessions provide an opportunity for participants to learn:

• the basics of CAS, especially as the Standards facilitate functional area improvement and achievement
• how the tools provided by CAS can support effective FSAP leadership and operations, and
• how FSAP and its staff are able to convey contribution to institutional goals of student learning, development, and success.
