Perspectives

Letter from the Editors

by Andrew Hohn and Aubrey Cala

As we enter 2026, AFA celebrates a milestone as an association: 50 years of supporting the people who shape fraternity and sorority life. It marks half a century of mentoring professionals, challenging outdated practices, elevating new ideas, and helping us all navigate complexities of work that is constantly changing.

This anniversary is a time for all of us to pause at a meaningful crossroads. We honor the leaders who built the foundation of our field (often with limited resources) while also acknowledging how the landscape has shifted. We’d be remiss to not mention the wide range of people and partners who have contributed to the profession over the Association’s tenure, too: the campus professionals and HQ staff members working to innovate in the advising and support chapters receive, culturally-based organizations and their leadership who advocated for inclusion in the industry, researchers digging into data and experiences to bolster our professional knowledge, and so many more.

The work looks different today based on new student needs, technology, and expectations of what community and belonging should be. Yet, the overarching mission of AFA has remained steadfast through each transition.

This issue of Perspectives explores that evolution. We begin the year looking back at a few voices on the history of AFA while starting to think about the next 50 years. This issue includes reflections from past Association presidents, perspectives from current frontline professionals, and even a look back at a Perspectives article from the archives.

Progress doesn’t arrive at once; it’s built over time, year by year. We hope that this is the springboard for you to reflect on the work our industry does and think about how you can help to contribute to the next 50 years of AFA.

We are grateful to the authors who shared their perspectives in this issue, and to you – the reader – for the work you do every day to support students and advance our profession.
