When I reflect on my membership in AFA, I realize that being an engaged member takes on many forms over time. At different points in my almost 20 years in the association, my engagement, like many of you, has looked like attending our annual meeting, participating in professional development webinars and courses, asking thoughtful questions in breakout sessions, learning from peers and experts, and authentically showing up for this important work that we care deeply about. In other phases of my career and membership with AFA I was bolder, taking intentional steps outside of my comfort zone to connect with someone new, to support as a volunteer, or to take on more formal leadership in spaces where I thought I had something to offer.
No matter how our involvement ebbs and flows from year to year, one constant way to remain engaged is by voting in our annual elections. Far from a simple act, voting is an opportunity to provide feedback and communicate your perspective. It gives each of us a chance to shape AFA’s future, strengthen our profession as a representative voice for our industry and reaffirm the Association’s role as a relational and community space for all of us.
Many of you followed Devin’s advice from our April newsletter and participated in the call for nominations for the Board of Directors and now the Governance and Nominations committee is working diligently to present an outstanding slate of candidates for this year’s election.
I encourage you to take time to learn about the individuals seeking to lead. Review the candidate video submissions and answers to questions and as you prepare to vote, consider not only each candidate’s qualifications but also how their priorities align with what matters most to you and the direction of the Association.
The open voting period this year is July 24 – August 14, 2026. Exercise your voice and cast your vote. Demonstrate that you are engaged and role model this value in practice. Your participation will help shape the future of our Association!
