There is something to be said for the confidence of Sally O’Malley, who proudly reminds us, “I’m 50! Fifty years old! And I like to kick, stretch, and kick!” There is no hesitation, no apology, just a clear sense of pride in exactly where she is. As AFA marks its 50th anniversary, we are approaching this milestone in much the same way. Not as something to downplay, but as something to own with confidence and continue stretching into what comes next.
Fifty years represents a legacy of advancing a profession that is complex, evolving, and worthy of serious investment. AFA has long been the place where fraternal advising is not only practiced, but strengthened, challenged, and elevated. That legacy has required us to stretch our thinking, expand our impact, and continue moving forward with purpose.
Across all of our professional development offerings, our commitment is rooted directly in our mission: to elevate the standard for effective professional practice in fraternity and sorority advising. AFA does this by developing professional competency, advancing research, advocating for the profession, and creating meaningful community. Our programs are intentionally designed to strengthen the skills, judgment, and impact of those who serve in this work. That means creating learning experiences that are not only relevant, but rigorous, evidence-informed, and grounded in real practice. It means building spaces where professionals can engage deeply with ideas, challenge assumptions, and leave better equipped to lead.
The Board’s role is to ensure that this standard is sustained and strengthened. We take seriously our responsibility to steward the Association’s resources, and we do so with a long-term view. Through strong financial health and disciplined financial management, AFA is well-positioned to make strategic choices that prioritize member experience while maintaining organizational stability. This reflects a shared investment in the profession, both in how the Association allocates and uses its own resources, and in how the investments from members in AFA programs provide the value that is reflective of that investment. AFA will continue to deliver unapologetically high-quality professional development. Excellence at this level is not incidental. It is the result of intentional, sustained investment.
As we close out our current strategic plan and prepare to launch what comes next, we are making decisions that will expand AFA’s reach and deepen its impact. These are intentional moves to ensure that AFA continues to define excellence in our field for the next 50 years. Being part of AFA means being part of a profession that values growth, expertise, and impact. We are proud of that standard, and we remain committed to delivering on it. And like Sally O’Malley, we are not slowing down at 50. We will continue to stretch our thinking, kick forward new ideas, and build toward what comes next.
