On-Demand Professional Development Courses

AFA’s on-demand professional development courses give participants an opportunity to build their knowledge and skills in core function areas of the fraternity/sorority profession, such as advising, financial management, and more.

Funded through the generous support of the AFA Foundation and developed in partnership with Titanium Educational Partner Plaid LLC, AFA professional development courses build and expand participant knowledge in key areas of the fraternity/sorority profession. Courses are available to participants for one year after registration, so professionals can watch recorded sessions from the comfort of their workplace or home.

Available Courses

Advising Practices

This seven-part series will introduce or reacquaint fraternity/sorority professionals with the concept of advising and effective advising practices.

The Advising Practices course series includes:

  • Two 25-minute courses on foundational advising theories
  • One 25-minute course on working with fraternal umbrella associations and organizations
  • Four 25-minute umbrella association courses (presented by representatives from NALFO, NAPA, NIC, and NPC), designed to equip you will the knowledge and skills to best collaborate with these organizations

Who should register?

The Advising Practices course series is designed for professionals with student-facing advising responsibilities, making it ideal for graduate students, new professionals, and advancing professionals. These courses can also serve as a “booster” for professionals who wish to brush up on foundational advising theories and review best practices for collaborating with umbrella associations and organizations.

Continuing Education: Certified Student Affairs Educators (CSAEd) may obtain up to 3.5 CE credits for attending this program. This program is eligible for Core or Fraternity Sorority Life specialty (FSL) credit [Student Learning, Development and Success].

Each course is equivalent to 0.5 CE credits (CORE or FSL) for a total of 3.5 credits. After completing the course series, CSAEd are invited to complete the program evaluation to receive a certificate of completion.

AFA has been approved by the Higher Education Consortium for Student Affairs Certification to provide CE credit for Certified Student Affairs Educators (CSAEd). Programs that qualify for CE credit in this program will be clearly identified. AFA is solely responsible for all aspects of this program.

Financial Management

This three-part series will introduce or reacquaint professionals or other fraternity and sorority life partners with basic financial management concepts in higher education, including various institutional and organizational budgeting approaches.

The Financial Management course series includes:

  • One 25-minute course on higher education budget models
  • One 25-minute course on budgeting concepts
  • One 25-minute course on basic fundraising principles

Who should register?

The Financial Management course series is designed for professionals with increasing budgetary responsibilities, making it ideal for advancing professionals and new directors. These courses can serve as a primer for professionals seeking increasing responsibilities in financial management, a guide for professionals who oversee finances as an institution’s sole fraternity/sorority professional, or as a “booster” for professionals who wish to brush up on financial management, budgeting, and fundraising concepts.

Continuing Education: Certified Student Affairs Educators (CSAEd) may obtain CE credits for attending this program. This program is eligible for Core or Fraternity Sorority Life specialty (FSL) credit [Financial and Facility Management].
