Membership as a Professional Development Investment

by John W. Keith, AFA Treasurer

One of the things I love most about AFA is that we’re a community of educators who truly believe in lifelong learning. Whether you’re brand new or have been involved for years, professional development isn’t just a nice-to-have benefit—it’s central to our mission of supporting student success through fraternity and sorority life.

Higher education is always evolving, and our ability to grow, adapt, and lead with intention matters now more than ever. That’s why AFA is committed to offering resources that help each of us become stronger professionals—and ultimately, better advocates for our students and communities. If you’re not already, I invite you to familiarize yourself with the following:

Finding the Value in Membership

  • On-Demand Learning: Through AFA Learning, you can tap into 25+ hours of exclusive content—including AdvanceU recordings and CE-eligible courses—anytime, anywhere. It’s learning on your schedule.
  • Legal & Legislative Updates: Stay up to date with semi-annual briefings that help you understand and respond to legal and policy changes in our field.
  • Miami University’s miniMBA Program: Thanks to our partnership with Tri Delta, members can enroll in this business-focused program designed specifically with higher ed professionals in mind.
  • Community Engagement: AFA offers identity-based collectives and regional communities that create space for connection, collaboration, and support. Whether you’re a Latinx/a/o professional, part of the Black Diaspora, running a single professional operation, or a woman professional working with men’s fraternities, there’s a space for you here.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: With over 150 roles available, volunteering with AFA is a great way to give back, gain leadership experience, and grow your network.

Looking Ahead

As treasurer and a proud member of the AFA Board of Directors, I’ve seen firsthand the power of community, education, and connection within our association. When we lean into the opportunities AFA provides, we not only grow as professionals—we help elevate the entire field of fraternity/sorority advising.

Let’s keep investing in each other, learning from one another, and building a future where our students thrive.
