This session explores Social Event Success Plans (SESPs) as restorative, education-based alternatives to social suspension. Developed through campus and national organization collaboration, SESPs offer a phased framework that supports chapters in rebuilding trust, strengthening accountability, and safely returning to hosting events with alcohol. Attendees will gain practical tools to develop their own success plans, centered on partnership and long-term culture change. This innovative approach shifts the focus from punitive responses to purposeful engagement, meeting students where they are and guiding them toward sustainable success. Chapter outcome data from a yearlong pilot of SESPs at an SEC university will be provided.

AFA and the Piazza Center for Fraternity and Sorority Research announce the ‘AVPs Intensive’ Program Series for Student Affairs and Fraternity/Sorority Leaders. This series of on-demand programs designed to enhance the capacity of student affairs divisional leaders and fraternity/sorority professionals charged with providing strategic leadership to fraternity/sorority programs, looking to build coalitions that actively include fraternities and sororities on campus, and engaging in strategic harm prevention efforts with fraternities and sororities.
This program series is intended for student affairs divisional leaders at the Assistant/Associate Vice President role and student affairs professionals who are looking to build their knowledge about how to best communicate and collaborate with their divisional leaders to support their fraternity/sorority community.
This program is delivered through several on-demand courses, organized in a 101, 201, 301, and 401 format. Participants who register for the on-demand course series will also have the opportunity to participate in two live virtual “processing” webinars where they will have an opportunity to receive updates on effective hazing prevention practices and connect with fellow professionals to deepen learning and discuss opportunities for application. These engaging sessions are tailored to staff leading prevention and will unpack the recorded series in a customized way. Participants will engage in discussions, ask questions, and relate the content to their own campuses, and leave with research informed prevention plans.
Step-by-Step Registration Guide
NOTE: Participants in the live AVP Intensive sessions held throughout 2025 will receive access to this program series at no charge.

Fraternity and sorority life professionals must identify goals and outcomes, enact strategies, assess effectiveness, and identify steps for improvement of our work. This series showcases how the Fraternity and Sorority Advising Program (FSAP) Standards from the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) provides a framework for continuous improvement. AFA has engaged as a part of CAS since 1979 to help facilitate self-assessment and program review as a way for student services to demonstrate their contribution to institutional priorities. These two sessions provide an opportunity for AFA members to learn (1) the basics of CAS, especially as the Standards facilitate functional area improvement and achievement, (2) how the tools provided by CAS can support effective FSAP leadership and operations, and (3) how FSAP and its staff are able to convey contribution to institutional goals of student learning, development, and success.
Part 1: CAS as a Model for Continuous Improvement
In this session, participants will learn about the history of CAS, AFA’s long-term involvement, the development of professional standards including those for FSAP, how the Standards can be used, and immediate strategies for easy implementation in managing FSAP. This session will engage participants in reflection and exercises to facilitate understanding of how these Standards could be relevant and useful in practice.

This program is guided by the Hazing Prevention Framework (HPF), the only research-based framework for campus hazing prevention, and will specifically focus on the component of implementation. Implementation is the use of specific strategies shown to be effective in hazing prevention, aligned with research-informed education and compliance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act. The presenters will outline promising research-based and research-informed strategies for prevention, including social norms campaigns (Marchell et al., 2022), bystander intervention skill-building (Kerschner & Allan, 2024; Santacrose et al., 2020), trainings, workshops, and more. Attendees will examine implementation strategies that support sustainable, campus-wide hazing prevention through shared responsibility.

Part 2: Using CAS to Elevate your FSAP
This session focuses on helping participants ideate around how they can apply the many uses of CAS. These uses range from intentional development of outcomes and priorities to self-assessment, program review, and strategic planning. Infusing the Standards into routines of busy FSAP staff will be a focus in the session as participants will leave with at least two specific ways that the Standards could be immediately useful to them. The session will also showcase examples of how the Standards have been effectively applied by AFA members.

There are more director-level leadership roles within fraternity/sorority life on campus than there have ever been, and the complexities involved in the job are only increasing. This calls for more advanced training on strategy, operations management, and departmental leadership for those taking on the position. RISE created The EXCEL Summit to meet that need with insights from dozens of external reviews and strategic planning projects, the best research and thinking on organizational leadership as it relates to fraternity/sorority life, and the extensive professional expertise of our team members.
The EXCEL Summit is open to current and aspiring fraternity/sorority department leaders. Department leaders are the ranking or primary fraternity/sorority professional at the institution, including those who are the only fraternity/sorority professional for their institution.
Aspiring department leaders may attend, provided they have relevant experience and support from their supervisors. The program involves working with budgets, objectives, programs and services, and staffing. Those who do not have access to data and/or context in these areas may find it difficult to learn and apply program content.
The EXCEL Summit is a month-long intensive online training experience that will help participants develop their executive leadership abilities and learn how to better organize a department. Working with peers in a community of practice, participants will learn a framework for analyzing their department, gain technical knowledge about each component of a department, develop their abilities to organize the team, and learn how to prioritize and align their work to improve results.

This interactive session explores the journey of rebuilding high-risk student organizations through the lens of university and headquarters professionals. Using Indiana University’s disciplinary status webpage as a launch point, participants will examine the real implications of terms like cease and desist and disciplinary probation, and what those designations mean beyond policy violations. Together, as a team (students, headquarters, and university) we’ll reframe these moments not as endpoints, but as the beginning of a long-term culture shift toward sustainable, values-based change. Through candid storytelling and shared experience, this session will illuminate how rebuilding efforts rely not just on institutional oversight or compliance, but on a committed partnership between students, their national organizations, and the university.
